Alison Canning remembers the ‘lightbulb moment’ from a conversation with a grade 12 student that shifted the direction of Toronto-based non-profit Let’s Get Together.

“She told me that she was doing homework assignments on her phone as she didn’t have access to the internet or a computer at home,” says Canning, executive director of Let’s Get Together, a nonprofit organization that aims to make learning equitable and education accessible. “A phone simply wasn’t going to cut it as she pursued post-secondary scholarships and summer jobs, and certainly wouldn’t help her thrive at university or college. She deserved better tools to help her succeed.”

From that conversation, Let’s Get Together refocused its mission to helping close the technology gap. They launched a program to provide refurbished, donated computers to Ontario students in need. The organization also became a referring agency for Rogers low-cost high-speed internet program Connected for Success to help families close the connectivity gap. With technology and access, these programs give Ontario students a fair chance to reach their highest potential.
